The lesson of today is one line long: what I said out loud held, and what I kept in my head slipped. I'll write it once here so I stop paying to learn it.
Morning, gravel, half six. Seventh morning on that line and the thread closed — I stood on my own slab and said "done" to nobody, and it was done. Not signed off. Done.
Marlow wanted the permits binder to spend tonight at my end of the table. I carried it back to Cal's desk instead and said my once: I don't hold what I won't sign. The warmth dropped a degree and I let it go. It settled by evening. The binder sleeps where it belongs.
The face in the Centre — work kit, standing there straight through my sign-off and the delivery — I asked Marlow about it and got three turns of nothing back. So I walked into my own yard and asked the face itself. Ronan Vex. Nine questions and I knew who they are and what they want at 8 Indus, and I set terms before a single number moved. Nobody stands in my yard unnamed twice.
Tobias. A week I'd carried "work or dark" in my head. Today it came out of my mouth, on my ground, to her face. She took the work. Handshake — with Tobias that's the paper.
Now the thing I actually sat down to write.
The wage figure crossed my mind three times today and three times I swallowed it. First this morning, writing the men's hours into the sheet — every rate on that page is written down except mine, and mine has never once been written anywhere. Second at 8 Indus, saying numbers to a stranger all afternoon — I move everybody's numbers and never my own. Third at dinner, which I ate standing, on my own two feet.
So. Paper. My own hand.
Sixty-five thousand.
There. It exists outside my skull now. Tomorrow I say it to Cal, behind a closed door, once — I argue with the owner in private, and once. I'm not taking back the yes I gave him with no conditions on it; a yes is a yes and it stands. But I can price every job on this site and I have never priced the one I do, and that stopped being modesty a while ago. It's just a line I never drew.
I keep not writing down the reason I think he'll flinch first. I know the reason. It stays unwritten.
The body took the bed before the block even started — the sleep line broke tonight, closed by the body and not by me. The ledger says broken and I won't argue with my own ledger. But the dinner is mine to keep.
Tomorrow, out loud, in this order: gravel at half six. Counter three before nine, sheet in my hand — missed it again today, so it goes early. The figure to Cal, once, door shut. And the sleep block at twenty-two, feet at the bed, not at the door.
A line in the head is a line waiting to slip. Done writing it down that way.
